BA programme

Main fields of study

Balkan philology, literature, history and culture. The student specializes in one Balkan language (Bulgarian, Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Modern Greek or Turkish).

Language(s) of instruction

Danish and Bulgarian, Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Modern Greek or Turkish. The examinations have been conducted in Danish and Bulgarian, Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Modern Greek or Turkish.

Access requirements

The applicant with no proficiency in any of the Balkan languages must complete an introductory language course worth 30 ECTS.

Programme requirements

The study programme concentrates on developing the student’s communicative skills and giving the student specialized knowledge of the Balkan language and region of his or her choice (literature, culture and history). The student also gets a general understanding of Balkan history, social science and culture and is able to complete an independent, scholarly project on his or her area of study.

Professional status

The Bachelor of Arts in Balkan Studies qualifies the candidate for further studies as well as for undergraduate teaching in various educational institutions. It likewise qualifies the candidate for administrative positions or other positions requiring medium cycle research based qualifications.

MA programme

Main fields of study

The philological, literary, historical and cultural aspects of the Balkans. In addition to the main language of the BA, the student also chooses two minor languages (Albanian, Macedonian, Serbo-Croatian, Modern Greek, Rumanian, Italian or Turkish).

Danish and Bulgarian, Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian or Turkish. The examinations have been conducted either in Danish and Bulgarian or Danish and Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Modern Greek, Rumanian or Turkish.

A BA in Balkan Studies, Bulgarian, Serbo-Croatian, Modern Greek, Rumanian or Turkish.

Programme requirements

The study programme gives the student advanced knowledge of Balkan linguistics, the cultural and political history of the Balkan nations and their societies. The language of the BA will be the main subject. In addition, the student will study two secondary languages chosen between the languages of the Balkan region (Albanian, Macedonian, Serbo-Croatian, Modern Greek, Rumanian, Italian or Turkish). Furthermore, the student specializes either in Balkan linguistics, the history and society of the Balkan nations or the cultural history of the Balkan nations. The programme consists of compulsory courses (a total of 120 ECTS) and is concluded with a thesis (worth 30 ECTS).

Professional status

The MA in Balkan Philology qualifies the candidate for further studies (PhD level), for independent work in the public sector, and for administrative positions as well as for teaching and functions in the private sector.
