Chinese Studies

BA programme

Main fields of study

Chinese Studies is the study of Chinese society, history, culture, literature and language.

Language(s) of instruction

Primarily Danish and English. The examinations have been conducted in Danish and Chinese as well as in English.

Access requirements

The applicant with no proficiency in Chinese must complete an introductory language course worth 60 ECTS.

Programme requirements

The Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies aims at giving the student a basic practical command of the Chinese language as well as basic theoretical knowledge about important aspects of Chinese society, history, culture and language. The student is required to be familiar with the methodological aspects of the academic study of Chinese society, history, culture and language. The student furthermore must independently be able to seek knowledge about China and to communicate it to the public.

The 2005 study programme totals 240 ECTS which consist of compulsory language courses (105 ECTS), content courses (75 ECTS), electives outside the Chinese study programme (a total of 45 ECTS), and a final paper (15 ECTS). The compulsory language courses include a 60 ECTS introductory course in Chinese.

Professional status

Graduates from Chinese Studies are qualified for non-specialized positions that are related to East Asia or require basic academic skills.

MA programme in East Asian Studies

Main fields of study

East Asian Studies is the study of Chinese, Japanese or Korean and East Asian society history and culture.

Language(s) of instruction

Primarily Danish and English. The examinations have been conducted in Danish and English as well as Chinese, Japanese or Korean.

Access requirements

A completed BA in Chinese, Japanese or Korean Studies.

Programme requirements

The Master of Arts in East Asian Studies aims at giving students a practical command of the Chinese or Japanese or Korean language and theoretical knowledge of important aspects of East Asian Studies. The student is required to be well versed in methodological aspects of the academic study of East Asian society, history, culture and language. Moreover, the student must independently be able to seek academic knowledge about East Asia and to communicate it to the public.

The study programme consists of a large compulsory block of courses (a total of 90 ECTS) and is concluded with a Master’s thesis worth 30 ECTS. 

Professional status

The MA in East Asian Studies qualifies the candidate for Asia-related positions within the fields of research, teaching and trade. In addition, graduates with an MA in East Asian Studies are qualified for administrative and other positions where general analytical skills are required.
