BA programme
Main fields of study
Indology is the study of Indian society, history, religion, culture and its languages Sanskrit and Pali.
Language(s) of instruction
Primarily Danish. Some courses have been taught in English. The
examinations have been conducted in Danish as well as in English.
Access requirements
The applicant with no proficiency in the Indian languages must complete an introductory course in Sanskrit worth 60 ECTS.
Programme requirements
The Bachelor of Arts in Indology aims at giving students a basic
command of the Sanskrit and Pali languages as well as basic theoretical
knowledge of important aspects of Indian society, history, culture and
languages. The student is required to be familiar with methodological
aspects of the academic study of Indian society, history, culture and
language. The student must independently be able to seek knowledge
about India and to communicate it to the public.
The 2005 study programme totals 240 ECTS which consist of compulsory
language courses (105 ECTS), content courses (75 ECTS), electives
outside the Indology programme (a total of 45 ECTS), and a final paper
(15 ECTS). The compulsory language courses include a 60 ECTS
introductory course in Sanskrit.
Professional status
Graduates from Indology are qualified for non-specialized positions that are related to South Asia or require basic academic skills.
MA programme
Main fields of study
The South Asian languages (Tibetan, Sanskrit, and Pali) and South Asian culture, history and literature.
Language(s) of instruction
Primarily Danish. Some courses have been taught in English. The
examinations have been conducted in Danish and English as well as the
appropriate South Asian language(s).
Access requirements
A completed BA in Indology or Tibetan Studies.
Programme requirements
The Master of Arts in South Asian Studies aims at giving students a
practical command of the Tibetan or selected Indian language(s) and
theoretical knowledge of important aspects of South Asian Studies. The
student is required to be well versed in the methodological aspects of
the academic study of South Asian society, history, culture and
language. Moreover, the student must independently be able to seek
academic knowledge about South Asia and to communicate it to the public.
The study programme consists of a large compulsory block of courses (a
total of 90 ECTS) and is concluded with a thesis worth 30 ECTS.
Professional status
The Master of Arts in South Asian Studies qualifies the candidate
for Asia-related positions within the fields of research, teaching and
trade. In addition, graduates with an MA in South Asian Studies are
qualified for administrative and other positions where general
analytical skills are required.
