Centre for Contemporary Buddhist Studies

The Centre for Contemporary Buddhist Studies (CCBS) is an interdisciplinary research center that brings together scholars, students and stakeholders to explore how contemporary Buddhist ideas and practices influence, and are influenced by, the social, economic, material and more-than-human relations in which they are embedded.

Established in 2016 and based at the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies, the CCBS generates a fruitful academic environment that brings together scholars from different disciplines to further research in the field of contemporary Buddhism. The research centre provides a supportive environment in which scholars, students, and others can immerse themselves in the questions generated by our four strategic research areas:

  • Buddhism in the Anthropocene
  • Buddhism and economy
  • Materials and materiality in Buddhism
  • Buddhism and waste
