Gender issues after communism – University of Copenhagen

Gender issues after communism

Guest Lecture by Katarzyna Zielińska, Jagellonian University, Kraków.

The studies on post-socialist transformations in Central and Eastern Europe focus mostly on the shifts occurring in the political, economic and social spheres in the context of ongoing democratization.

The lecture/seminar will aim to enrich those interpretations by looking at the changes through the "lens of gender". The first part will briefly discuss the emancipatory project of the socialist regime and its ambiguous outcomes. The second part will describe the situation of women and men in economy, politics and society and offer some explanations of the shifts observed in gender norms and identities in post-1989 Poland.

Also, I will offer some references and comparison to other Visegrad countries. Finally, the last part will discuss the impact of the EU accession on diffusion of gender equality norms.
