Now is the Time: Beyond Rupture in the Anthropology of Christianity

Guest lecture by Naomi Haynes, University of Edinburgh.

Abstract:

One of the most productive lines of inquiry in the anthropology of Christianity has examined how Christian adherence structures the experience of time. Converts, particularly in recently missionized communities, are encouraged to “make a complete break with the past” in anticipation of the expected rupture of the apocalypse.

In contrast to this “punctuated” view of time, this paper will examine a Christian temporality focused not on a past or future break, but rather on an expansive present.

This analysis serves both to move us beyond the language of rupture that has been so central to the anthropology of Christianity, and to connect recent developments in Christian time to the temporality of late capitalism.
