Issues in Indian Iconography

Indological Lecture by Gudrun Bühnemann (University of Wisconsin at Madison).

This talk introduces important issues in Indian (and mainly Hindu) iconography to a broad audience. The first part provides an overview of major components that are taken into consideration when identifying images of divinities. The second part focuses on (1) the question of the interpretation of the meaning(s) of the attributes, discussing examples from the Viṣṇudharmottara-Purāṇa and (2) the relationship between textual prescription and representation in art.
