Currently the European continent seems deeply fragmented. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has challenged any idea we may have had of a stable continent. But also Brexit, ideological and political disputes within the EU, conflicts over borders and recognition in the Balkans, the rise of exclusivist nationalism and disagreements about refugee politics among many other issues divide people and countries in Europe.

Yet, the Eurovision, the flagship of a common European media and culture politics, still seek to unite the Europeans (including Israel and Australia) through music. This afternoon seminar explores the main ideological, political and aesthetic issues in this year’s Eurovision and places the popcultural celebration of Europe in a historic perspective.
