13 International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East (ICAANE)
In accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) formulated by the United Nations, the 13th ICAANE themes will focus on sustainability, inclusion and belonging.
A main theme of the conference is sustainability. In the Middle East, you can follow the relationship between nature and people through hundreds of thousands of years. The hope is that the long time horizons can contribute to an understanding of the challenges that adaptation, sustainability and climate change mean in our own time.
Another main theme is inclusion. How do archaeologists involve a local population in connection with fieldwork? The hope is that inclusion can increase understanding and appreciation of cultural heritage and reduce the risk of destruction, which we have unfortunately seen many examples of in connection with the armed conflicts of the last decades in the Middle East.
