Polish perspectives on the Russo-Ukrainian war and their historical background

Guest lecture held by British historian Roger Moorhouse on Polish perspectives on the Russo-Ukrainian war and their historical background.

Soon after the Russian invasion of Ukraine last year, declarations of sympathy as well as humanitarian and military help started flooding into Ukraine. At the same time, discussions began concerning the art and extension of international reactions and sanctions towards the Russian aggressor.

In all of these questions, Poland has been one of the most active players and insisting voices. Actually, the Polish engagement started much earlier – along with other countries in East Central Europe, Poland had continuously been warning about Russia’s expansive intentions.

The Polish concerns have a solid historical ground. With the exposed location between Germany and Russia, Polish history has taken many dramatic turns, and not least the tough experiences with the threat from the East have been playing a crucial role in the formation of Poland’s self-image and foreign policy.
