Bordering Power: Unpacking the Authoritarianism-Migration Nexus in Egypt

Public lecture by Dr. Gerasimos Tsourapas, University of Glasgow.

In this talk, Professor Gerasimos Tsourapas (University of Glasgow) explores the complex interplay between labour migration and authoritarian power, drawing on data collected through fieldwork visits to Egypt from 2010 to the present. Using an interdisciplinary approach that combines insights from migration and diaspora studies, comparative politics, international relations, and Middle East studies, the talk examines how non-democratic regimes, like Egypt’s, strategically govern labour migration to bolster political control. By analysing state control over migrant flows, labour export strategies, and diaspora engagement, the talk aims to shed light on the varied mechanisms through which authoritarian governments in the Global South leverage migration governance as a tool for resilience and influence.
