Abstract

The global south is moving from the margins of world history to the center stage, the veritable staging ground of the future. In 2022, Russia’s aggression in Ukraine brought to the surface an influential geopolitical constituency forged by the persistent refusal to take sides in the conflict. Yet this emergent territory across Asia, Africa, and Latin America isn’t altogether unfamiliar. It brings alive the old postcolonial world even as it morphs into ever-new forms. In this talk, I trace the new and old lineages, the abstract and the material, ideologies and practices that underpin the redrawing of the twenty-first-century world.
