About the book

The Fate of Third Worldism in the Middle East, edited by Sune Haugbolle and Rasmus Elling, delves into the captivating and complex narrative of the actors, the implications and the dramatic decline of Third Worldism in the Middle East during the latter half of the twentieth century. This revolutionary idea, which promised universal emancipation through anti-imperialist militancy and international solidarity, could not stand in face of the historical realities such as the Islamic theocracy in Iran and the erosion of the Palestinian Revolution.

The Fate of Third Worldism in the Middle East reexamines this defining era by focusing on key protagonists, including student activists, guerrilla fighters, volunteer nurses, and militant intellectuals. Through a series of meticulously researched chapters, the book sheds light on the lived realities of the time and prompts the reader to rethink perennial questions surrounding self-determination, emancipation, change, and solidarity.
