Systems of Justice, Colonialism, Post-Colonialism and Growing out of it

Reception in connection with painting exhibition in acrylic by Rubya Mehdi.

Welcome speech by Annika Hvithamar, Head of the Department for Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies, followed by reflections from professor Hanne Petersen (JUR) and associate professor Kirsten Thisted (ToRS).

About the exhibition

The paintings in the exhibition constructively revisit the history of colonialism, promoting decolonization and fostering connections. The main issues explored are systems of justice. The systems of justice under colonial rule are generally similar worldwide. Therefore, the artist has compared Greenland, Pakistan, and the Indian subcontinent with other issues related to expansionism.

The exhibition is part of Rubya Mehdi’s academic interdisciplinary writings, specifically “Understanding Gender and Diversity in Europe: Experiences of Migrant Single Mothers in Denmark," published by Springer Press in 2024-25.

The exhibition is open for visitors from 8 September –  28 November, 2025.
