The New Gulf: Power, Peace and Human Rights in a Changing Regional Order
Panel talk with Lars Erslev Andersen (DIIS), Fannie Agerschou-Madsen (Roskilde University), Maryam al Khawaja (human rights activist and director of the FreeAlKhawaja Campaign).
Across the Gulf, states are redefining their regional and global roles through diplomatic outreach, economic transformation, and ambitious climate and energy agendas. Yet beneath this forwardlooking narrative lie persistent questions of power, legitimacy, and human rights
This panel examines how Gulf governments navigate these contradictions: projecting stability while managing internal dissent; promoting green transitions while deepening security partnerships; and reshaping regional alliances in a moment of shifting global order. By bringing together researchers and practitioners, the conversation will situate current Gulf politics within broader debates about governance, authoritarian resilience, and the future of the regional order.
