Indian National Dances: devotion in a pluralistic setting
Activity: Talk or presentation types › Lecture and oral contribution
Stine Simonsen Puri - Lecturer
With reference to a short introductory dance presentation of a devotional Bharatanatyam dance on Shiva, it was arued that one can learn devotion, since emotions can be taught through a corporeal practice. Therefore learning a devotional dance brings insight into the devotees realtionship to God and the world. Dance is thus a method of inter-cultural/religious understanding. Studying a dance like Kathak, which is practiced by both Hindus and Muslims in India, and which is a fusion of Hinud and Muslim dance tradtions can bring insight into the non-contradictable aspects of religion in India
