Debating Multiculturalism and the Nation-State
"One of the long standing aims of political multiculturalism has been to strengthen the sense of nation. Not through cultural conservatism, majoritarianism or assimilation but by pluralising the national identity. This means including those who may be marginalised or excluded but it is at the same time a project of making good what threatens to divide the national community" Tariq Modood.
The aim of this PhD course is to discuss the relationship between multiculturalism and national identity within the framework of the recent debates on the "death" of multiculturalism. Some of the questions Tariq Modood and Umut Ozkirimli will address in this context are: Does multiculturalism pose a threat to national integrity? Can the various policies pursued in the name of multiculturalism be used to strengthen the sense of nation? Is the term "multicultural nation" an oxymoron? Is it possible to pluralize national identity?
With its interdisciplinary focus, the course will be of interest to PhD students working on or interested in the prospects of multiculturalism and nationalism today.
