Casper’s abstract:
In 2001, as part of a surging political multiculturalism within Latin America, Mexico's Secretariat of Tourism launched the UNESCO inspired national tourism program Magical Villages. For the indigenous minorities, the new multicultural agenda has created an unprecedented arena of negotiation, as the state now seeks to embrace intangible indigenous heritage. Through the critical term museality and a governmentality perspective, I analyze the generic form and structure of the Magical Villages Program and its implementation in the magical village Cuetzalan, Puebla. Doing so, I seek to understand how distinct constituents of the Magical Villages Program express inherent power workings and facilitate the creation, articulation and distribution of particular views of the Mexican nation, its heritage and citizenship.
