While monumental hieroglyphic inscriptions may be the most recognisable
manifestation of Egyptian written culture today, the vast majority of texts
produced in Antiquity would have been written on other types of support and
with other scripts, even if—because of the low chances of survival for almost
all such object types—the archaeological record does not necessarily provide a
representative sample of what existed in the past.
