Fieldwork and Gender Studies in the Middle East

The purpose of this public workshop is to host researchers and academics to share their experiences while conducting fieldwork and teaching sensitive issues, including gender, in the Middle East.

It explores how invited scholars evaluate the opportunities, obstacles, or challenges they have encountered, and the negotiation or compromises they have made to complete their fieldwork. Based on their knowledge and expertise, the invited speakers share practical advice on the real conditions in the Middle East, rather than assumptions of some academic fields. This workshop also aims to equip participants with ethical guidelines, safety considerations, and practical strategies for navigating complex cultural and political landscapes in the region.

This workshop will be chaired by associate professor Jihan Zakarriya, and postdoctoral researchers Amal Al-Qawasmi, and Sumaiya Al-Wahaibi, from the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies (ToRS) and will include an audience Q&A. It is open to all researchers, academics, students, and the public.

The workshop is organized and funded by ERC-Starting Grant GulfFeminisms (101078083), ToRS, Copenhagen University.
