Jørgen Bæk Simonsen

Associate Professor emeritus

Born 1951 - studies at University of Copenhagen 1973-79 in history, history of religion and islamic studies and obtained the degree of dr. phil. in 1988 with a dissertation entitled Studies in the Genesis and Early Development of the Caliphal Taxation System.

From 1981 to 1984 I was part of a team establishing The Center for MIddle East Studies at the UNiversity of Odense, I cunducted a research initiative sponsored by The Danish Research Council for HUmanities about Islam and Muslims in Denmark from 1986 to 1988, and from 1989 to 1992 I had a post.doc. at The Institute for History, University of Copenhagen. In 1992 I was attached to The Carsten Niebuhr Institute, University of Copenhagen as Associate Professor and served as Director of Studies from 1993 to 1996 and then as Director of the Institute from 1996 to 2001. From 2001 to 2005 I was Director of the Danish Institute in Damascus and on my return I became Associate Professort at the Department of Cross Cultural and Regional Studies, University of Copenhagen.
