Online Workshop: Exploring Media Narratives in War, Conflict, and Peace – A Scholarly Exploration
The workshop aims to critically explore the role of media in constructing and influencing narratives around war, conflict, and peace. It will examine how media discourses shape public opinion and inform policy decisions, focusing on the media’s essential influence in social and political arenas. By analysing the mediated narratives, the workshop seeks to understand how media contributes to the escalation, continuation, or resolution of conflicts and its potential to foster peace.
We invite scholars from various disciplines to contribute to the webinar by analysing contemporary case studies and media tendencies across global geopolitical contexts.
Topics may include but are not limited to:
- The media narratives’ role in inciting conflict and/or fostering peace and reconciliation.
- The dominance of official narratives in conflict reporting.
- The use of dehumanising language or demonisation of adversaries in media.
- The spread of bias, propaganda, and misinformation.
- The influence of social media users in times of conflict or crisis.
- The role of AI in journalism and the implications of its use.
- The role of diaspora and exile communities in shaping media narratives.
The workshop will offer an opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue with scholars, journalists, and broader audiences. Furthermore, selected papers will be considered for publication in an edited volume.
We also welcome contributions exploring other dimensions of media narrative and conflict.
