Gross National Happiness: The Development Philosophy of a Buddhist Monarch
Virtual Talk Dasho Paljor J. Dorji (Dasho Benji), Special Advisor, National Environment Commission of Bhutan
Moderated by Professor Miguel Álvarez Ortega, Kyoto University and University of Seville
Abstract
In an age of climatic, spiritual and political crises, what leadership model and policy orientation can safeguard our shared future on this planet? Based on Dasho Benji’s lifelong services promoting sustainability and justice under the holistic development philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH), this dialogue between Dasho Benji and Professor Álvarez Ortega will examine the influence of Bhutan’s Buddhist principles in the approach of the country’s fourth king to holistic development. As a legacy of a Buddhist king, GNH today guides Bhutan’s approach towards a viable economy in harmony with its environment and cultural traditions. By promoting sustainable development and mindful prosperity, this talk posits GNH as a feasible approach to addressing many of the world’s complex problems by acknowledging their interconnectedness and holistically.
