Jeff Deutch

Jeff Deutch holds a doctorate in social sciences from Humboldt University in Berlin, and a Master of Public Policy from the Hertie School of Governance.

He is especially interested in how digital and visual material documenting conflict and crisis is produced, archived, investigated, and mobilised.

At the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies, Jeff will work with Nina Grønlykke Mollerup on the ERC-funded project BEFORE THE IMAGE. Drawing on his experience with visual archiving and open-source investigation, he'll explore the processes and infrastructures through which images are produced and made usable for human rights and justice. His work will combine ethnographic research with close collaboration with civil society practitioners, technologists and other actors who develop and use image technologies, contributing to the project's broader effort to understand how biases, political choices, and technical decisions become embedded in images before they are taken, processed, or seen.

Prior to joining UCPH, Jeff spent more than a decade working at the intersection of human rights, technology and documentation. He co-founded Syrian Archive and Mnemonic, where he helped develop methodologies and infrastructures for preserving, analysing and investigating digital documentation of human rights violations and international crimes. He has also worked with organisations including The Engine Room and Tactical Tech.
