One of the most influential factors for preserving and propagating a collective identity is narrative traditions, especially the stories people relate when that identity is vulnerable. Through storytelling, people can fashion and interpret their world. They can confront their past and their contemporary situations and envision their future and by which means this future will come about.

Place in the Global South

In recent decades, with increased scholarly attention to globalization and human mobility, place, both as a topic of investigation and as a conceptual framework, has gained a notable interest within the humanities and social sciences. People produce places by inscribing them with diverse content and meaning; emotions, historical and mythological events, political or religious ideologies. However, cultural, political, and development interventions embedded in certain power relations also produce places. Framed around two subthemes, this PhD seminar aims to examine how everyday practices, political processes and power relations produce places in the Global South. This seminar aims to bring together PhD students from various disciplines working on related themes.

A Sense of Belonging

The aim of this PhD course is to discuss the relationship between multiculturalism and national identity within the framework of the recent debates on the "death" of multiculturalism. Some of the questions Tariq Modood and Umut Ozkirimli will address in this context are: Does multiculturalism pose a threat to national integrity? Can the various policies pursued in the name of multiculturalism be used to strengthen the sense of nation? Is the term "multicultural nation" an oxymoron? Is it possible to pluralize national identity?

The Politics of Heritage & Community Engagement

The agency of heritage conservation in social transformations has rarely been the focus of conceptual debates or methodological interrogation. The rhetoric and reality of participatory democracy or active citizenship are under scrutiny for evidence-based outcomes. Connectivity and complexity are critical to understanding stakeholder engagement and accountability. The argument is that conservation is good business when stakeholder analysis is inclusive and responsive maximising on the delivery side with benefits to primary and other stakeholders. The lecture will draw on the analysis for framing the values embedded in the paradigm of an interdisciplinary methodology informing sustainable heritage development.

Materiality II: Material Religion

“All religion is material religion. All religion has to be understood in relation to the media of its materiality […] But the difficult part comes in understanding what precisely constitutes the materiality of material religion, what makes religious materiality either significant or religious, and according to whom.” So writes Matthew Engelke in Cambridge Companion to Religious Studies in 2012. This PhD seminar aims to explore, discuss and question such premise through case studies.

The First Annual ToRS-Saxo PhD Seminar

PhD fellows from both the ToRS and Saxo institutes are invited to present a paper on their current project. The seminar will focus on projects within the fields of ancient history, archaeology, cultural heritage and museology. The idea behind the seminar is to offer PhD fellows as well as students and other faculty members insight into the ongoing projects taking place at both institutes and to provide a platform for making new acquaintances.

Fieldwork seminar: Fieldwork in the Humanities - October 2013

Fieldwork is at the core of many of the PhD projects at ToRS and a productive period ’in the field’ is crucial for a successful thesis. The time allowed for fieldwork is, however, limited and it is therefore of importance to have an opportunity to discuss plans and alternatives, to be able to share experiences after coming back from fieldwork and to have response on drafts of analysis when the thesis text is about to take shape.

Dissertation Workshop: Social Mobility, Inequity and City in the Global South

In this multi-disciplinary dissertation workshop, we focus on the inequity of globalization in and around urban centers of the global South, from various theoretical and empirical perspectives, including but not limited to fields of history, sociology, anthropology, political science, political economy and development studies. We invite PhD students who have completed substantial dissertation research on any aspect of urbanized inequity in the world of globalization to discuss their work at a two-day workshop in New York City on 21-22 June, 2013.

Alternative Legitimacies. Explorations of Right Kinds of Wrong

Eric Hobsbawn’s has defined “social banditry” as a conscious challenge to prevailing social political orders and values occurring when there is a conflict of laws and often entailing a distinct element of social protest. The literary figure Robin Hood is an example of such a bandit who manages to convert officially illicit activities into a moral standpoint where doing wrong is seen as a legitimate alternative. But how do quests for alternative forms of legitimacy play out in the social world today?

Nationalt ph.d.-netværksseminar: Overgangen fra ph.d. til postdoc – karriereplanlægning, strategier eller tilfældigheder

Ved dette første seminar vil en række fremtrædende fondspersoner samt medlemmer af Det Frie Forskningsråd fortælle om, hvorledes og hvorfor de prioriterer postdoc midler, som de gør. Dertil fortæller ph.d-programledere om, hvad de forskellige ph.d-skoler kan tilbyde deres ph.d-studerende og hvorledes, de mener, ph.d-studerende bedst kan forberede sig på at søge postdoc midler og hvilke overvejelser de bør gøre sig i forbindelse med karriereplanlægning. Desuden er der inviteret en taler, som konkret har beskæftiget sig med talentudvikling. Sidst men ikke mindst kommer der nylige postdocs og fortæller om deres erfaringer med overgangen fra ph.d til postdoc.
